The abbreviation PLA stands for polyactides or polylactic acid and is a thermoplastic which can be excellently deformed by heating. Polyactide belongs to the group of synthetic polymers and is composed of many chemically bonded lactic acid molecules. PLA is made from regenerative raw materials for example made of corn starch and is considered to be particularly environmentally friendly. For this reason, PLA is often referred to as bioplastic, because thanks to the molecular structure of the lactic acid molecules, it has a biodegradability. However, it should be noted, that the biodegradability of PLA requires certain conditions to decompose the material within a reasonable time. These conditions are met almost exclusively in special industrial composting facilities, where polyactides can be degraded within a few months. In nature these criteria are not met and so the decomposition process of the environmentally friendly PLA takes much longer.
Apart from the environmental aspect, PLA is a material that is extremely easy to process, with a comparatively low melting point. That's why PLA filaments are one of the most commonly used filaments for 3D printing.
In its natural form, PLA is considered extremely transparent, but also brittle and is also suitable for the food industry. For some time, this biodegradable plastic has therefore been used for food packaging, cups or straws. PLA is quite expensive compared to other plastics approved for the food industry, such as PET.
PLA filaments have a continuous color fastness and a tensile strength of 10 to 60 MPa. In addition, PLA filaments are weather resistant and have high stability with respect to exposure to UV radiation. Depending on the color, the color intensity may fade (applies only to NEON colors). The average density of PLA, at 1.21 - 1.45 g / cm³, tends to be in the lower range for filaments, which is why PLA filaments are well suited for 3D printing in lightweight construction. PLA is not as heat resistant as ABS and has only a low temperature resistance of up to 65 ° C.
PLA is the perfect filament for beginners and can be easily processed by any standard 3D printer. In addition, PLA is considered non-flammable and complies with UL94 fire protection class, depending on the color. The light fastness of PLA filaments can be classified as very good and reaches, depending on the color, a value of 8 on the wool scale (ranging from 1 to 8).
NOTE: All our offered filaments are made of a sorted material and, apart from color pigments, are free of additives, foreign substances and plasticisers.
The processing of our PLA filaments is carried out with a suitable 3D printer using the FDM process. This means that printing is done layer by layer with a certain layer thickness until the printed object has reached its final shape and height. This process is also referred to as a melt layer process. The recommended extruder temperature for printing with PLA filaments is between 190 °C and 225 °C and depends, among other things, on the color of the filament. Detailed information on the processing temperatures can be found in the respective product description of our PLA filaments. Normally, 3D printing with PLA filaments can be dispensed with a heating bed, but we recommend to set for a good adhesion on the print bed a heating bed temperature from 30 °C to 60 °C.
All of our filament spools are wrapped neatly to ensure a smooth supply of material, eliminating tearing of the filament, thus disrupting pressure and rendering it unusable. The very high accuracy in terms of the roundness of the material, as well as in terms of deviations from the diameter, contributes to ensuring a constant flow of material at unchanged extrusion temperature. In addition, our PLA filament has only a very small delay (the so-called warping) during printing or cooling.
For our PLA filaments made in Germany only high quality raw materials are used. Among other things, this contributes to the fact that during the processing of the filament no unpleasant odor pollution occurs, which is why PLA filament can be processed easily in closed rooms.
