Balcony screws with threaded sleeve in light grey

Stainless steel ✓ Suitable for square profiles ✓ From 1 piece ✓

The light grey balcony screw set with threaded sleeve is made of stainless steel in an extremely corrosion-resistant A2 steel alloy. Included are a balcony screw with M5 thread in the selected length, as well as a threaded sleeve, which can be selected either in bright stainless steel or with a scratch-resistant head lacquer in light grey. In addition, the balcony screw set includes an inconspicuous spacer sleeve made of LLD-PE, which serves an important purpose as a sliding base as well as for shock and vibration damping. This is particularly relevant for outdoor cladding with HPL or Alu-Dibond, where a permanently secure fastening is required, especially for balcony and stair railings as fall protection. The head of the screw and sleeve is flat and slightly lenticular. For easy screwing into each other, they are provided with a non-slip screw drive with hexagon socket - better known as Torx - in size T20.

NOTE: The clamping range is slightly higher due to the threaded sleeve, so that 1mm to 5mm must be added to the thread length of the screw, which we stock in light grey in the sizes M5x25mm and M5x30mm. With a screw size of M5x25mm, the clamping range is therefore at least 26mm up to a maximum of 30mm.

The flat head of the threaded sleeve does not protrude far, unlike the nut. This not only makes it easier to clean the railing to which the panels are to be attached, but also looks more attractive. This is especially true if you choose a sleeve with a head lacquer finish in light grey, so that a tone-in-tone installation can be realised. It should be noted, however, that the profile depth must be at least 8mm when using threaded sleeves. In addition, a spanner is not required for processing the light grey screws and sleeves, but two Torx bits in size T20 are required.

Features of the balcony screw set with threaded sleeve in light grey

Balcony screws are not just simple threaded screws with M5 threads, but must meet a whole range of requirements so that the fastening of cladding panels to the railing is durable and low-maintenance. Very good corrosion resistance is of the utmost importance here, which is why we have our screws and threaded sleeves manufactured without exception from stainless steel and not from galvanised steel. The permanent strength of the screw connection is also important for fasteners for balcony cladding. We rely on a special two-component adhesive for the threaded sleeves, which, once both components have been mixed and hardened, ensures a permanently secure connection between the threaded screw and the threaded sleeve, which can only be released again with a great deal of force. The thread locker contains tiny glass beads that burst when the screw is screwed in and release the activator. This causes a chemical reaction with the actual adhesive, initiating chemical curing. However, this process can only be set in motion once, so that if the screw connection is ever loosened, the threaded sleeve must be replaced with a new one.

Light grey is a very light shade of grey which, like white surfaces, tends to yellow quickly if the necessary UV resistance is not provided. To ensure that this does not happen and that the screws can be used without hesitation outdoors for mounting HPL or aluminium composite panels on balcony balustrades and stair railings, we use a scratch-resistant powder coating that is characterised by high UV and weather resistance. The colour and surface gloss of the top coat is perfectly matched to the surface decor of the light grey HPL panels in RAL 7035.

The grey spacer sleeve, which is made of linear low density polyethylene (LLD-PE), ensures smooth expansion of the panels, which are very often constructed from HPL panels or aluminium composite panels for balcony cladding. PE has very good sliding properties and is therefore an ideal plastic to ensure the expansion of the panel without constraint. With an outer diameter of 21mm, the spacer provides a high bearing surface and thus absorbs vibrations caused by wind or movement, which can otherwise affect the longevity of the fastening. In addition, the sleeve, which is inserted into the hole of the square profile between the panel and the railing, provides optimal guidance for the balcony screw, so that the installation of the usually heavy panels is significantly simplified.

NOTE: Balcony and stair railings for fall protection are usually made of stainless steel. Here, our balcony screws, which are also made of stainless steel, are the perfect choice. However, caution is advised with constructions made of aluminium, because even if aluminium and stainless steel do not rust, the contact between the two metals can result in the formation of corrosion.

Use of balcony screws with threaded sleeve

The balcony screw set consisting of M5 threaded screw with lacquered screw head in light grey, a threaded sleeve - optionally lacquered or unlacquered - and a spacer sleeve made of grey polyethylene is mainly used where a constraint-free mounting of panels on square profiles has to be carried out. The head lacquering on one or both sides makes the set ideal for our light grey HPL panels or for light grey aluminium composite panels on a steel railing. The screw is inserted through the hole inside the panel through the spacer sleeve, which is pressed into the corresponding hole in the square profile in advance. From the other side, the threaded sleeve is then inserted and fixed with a suitable screwing tool to prevent it from turning. This is necessary because the adhesive applied to the internal thread of the threaded sleeve, which serves as a screw lock, narrows the thread slightly and the screw cannot be screwed in without countering.

While a balcony screw with cap nut can be used regardless of the profile thickness, the balcony screw set with threaded sleeve and spacer sleeve requires the square profile to be at least 18mm deep. This is due to the insertion depth of 12mm for the threaded sleeve plus the 5mm for the spacer washer. Although a profile width of more than 21mm is not mandatory, it completely covers the spacer washer made of light grey PE plastic. With smaller square profiles, the spacer sleeve can be dispensed with. However, the prerequisite is that an alternative is created which, on the one hand, has good impact resistance and vibration inhibition and, on the other hand, has good sliding properties. Our self-adhesive poly washers, for example, represent such an alternative. The advantage of these stick-on washers is that the tread depth can be reduced from at least 18mm to as little as 12mm. In such a case, however, special attention must be paid to the holes, because the hole in which the threaded sleeve is inserted remains unchanged with a diameter of 8.5mm. Whereas the hole towards the plate side must be reduced to Ø 5.5mm.

To insert the screws through the cladding panel and the supporting profile, they have to be drilled. The right drill bit is important because it must be adapted to the material and the diameter of the respective hole. For aluminium composite panels and the two holes in the square profile, use an HSS drill with a diameter of 8.5mm. The only exception is the one fixed-point hole that is required for each individual panel that is to be fastened for constraint-free assembly. Either a special fixed point sleeve is used here or the hole in the panel is drilled with a Ø 5.5mm drill. However, this only applies to the hole in the panel. The steel profile must still be drilled with 8.5mm. If panels made of light grey HPL are to be fitted instead, the panels, but not the steel square tubes, must be drilled with a different drill bit. To achieve the best possible drill hole quality, we advise using a special facade panel drill made of solid carbide. With HPL, a distinction is also made between the fixed point and the sliding points. For the fixed point, the drill should have a diameter of 6.0mm. The sliding points, on the other hand, are drilled with an 8.0mm drill bit.

Threaded screws with sleeve are an ideal fastener if the screw connection is to be made as flat as possible from both sides, without protruding thread or cap nut. Even if the name suggests that the screws are used for balcony cladding and balcony privacy screens with light grey panels, the possibilities are only limited by your own creativity. The light-grey screws are, for example, very popular for the self-conversion of vans into mobile homes in order to fix the interior fittings with light-grey decorative panels to profiles. Light grey panels and plates are particularly popular in such areas of application, because they create a bright but not too glaring interior that is inviting and homely.
