What is PTFE?

PTFE, or more precisely PolyTetraFluorEthylene (also known as Teflon) is an absolute high-performance plastic based on fluorocarbons. This can be seen from the temperature range of -200 to 260°C alone. The reason for the outstanding temperature resistance of PFTE is that fluorine is the most electronegative chemical element in the periodic table and forms extremely strong and rigid bonds to carbon.

The excellent technical properties of PTFE plastic, such as high abrasion resistance, high impact strength and very good weather resistance, can also be attributed to this strong intermolecular fluorocarbon bond.

PTFE has a very high chemical resistance. Two fluorine atoms are attached to each carbon atom and "pull" the electrons from the carbon with equal force. This creates an electrostatic symmetry in the molecule that has no effect on the outside and makes the molecule extremely non-polar. This property in conjunction with the high partial crystallinity of PTFE ensures that this plastic cannot be dissolved with common solvents such as acetone or petrol, which is why PTFE cannot be easily glued or painted.

Physical properties of PolyTetraFlourEthylene

PTFE sheets made of high-performance plastic have a high density and outstanding thermal properties. PolyTetraFlourEthylene, also known as Teflon, is food-grade approved for use in food and drinking water applications.

PTFE sheets have non-flammable properties and can withstand even extreme temperatures from -200 °C up to +260 °C and are very often used in the chemical industry thanks to their excellent resistance to chemicals.

With a physical density of approx. 2.4g/cm3, this material is significantly heavier than other plastic sheets we offer; other types of plastic are usually only approx. 1g/cm3.

How is PolyTetraFlourEthylene processed?

PTFE can be processed using all common machining methods. This plastic is excellent for sawing, turning, drilling, grinding and milling.

PTFE is anti-adhesive and therefore painting, gluing and laminating is not possible. Bonding PTFE to each other or to other materials is not possible with any adhesive, but only with adhesives specially designed for this purpose.

Areas of application for PTFE sheets

PTFE has excellent sliding properties. For this reason, PTFE is often used for plain bearings (in bridge construction, among other things).

PTFE sheets are used in many areas in the form of valve seats, pump rotors, roller coverings or as a sealing material for the chemical industry. PTFE is also frequently used in the sanitary sector under the name Teflon tape. PTFE sheets also function excellently as insulators.

Individual milled parts made of PolyTetraFlourEthylene

Do you need special milled parts made of PTFE according to exact specifications for prototype construction or for series production, for example seals or plain bearings for apparatus engineering or machine construction?

Thanks to our modern CNC milling centres, we can mill PTFE plastics exactly to your specifications, provided the maximum format of 2.0x1.0 metres is not exceeded. All we need is a design drawing from you. We can process the following formats: DXF, DWG, STEP or IGES. We are also able to convert AI and EPS files.

We will be happy to send you a customised offer in advance, including shipping costs, exactly according to your specifications and needs. Simply tell us the desired number of pieces per delivery in combination with a design drawing and we will calculate your individual price.
