HSS-G drill type HK especially for plastics

Self-centring ✓ Ideal for Plexiglas® ✓ Tip angle 80° ✓

With the HK type HSS twist drills from Bohrcraft, we offer high-quality drills in a ground design especially for drilling plastics. With a point angle of 80 degrees and a long spiral twist, the HK plastic drill bit is perfectly suited for drilling precise holes in our plastic sheets. The drills are particularly convincing for plastic sheets with a high surface hardness or plastic sheets with a low thickness, as the risk of chipping or cracking can be very significantly reduced by the drill geometry specially adapted to plastics. Especially when drilling brittle plastics such as PVC or acrylic glass, the choice of the right drill can make the difference between success and failure and contribute significantly to the quality and appearance of the hole.

The HSS-G drills are profile ground. This means that both the drill tip and the cutting edge along the flute are specially ground in a separate work step to achieve a higher level of sharpness. This ensures a much higher precision in terms of roundness and diameter of the hole. The total length of the drill, as well as the useful length of the drill spiral, varies depending on the selected drill size, which is indicated in diameter and total length in the selection menu. All plastic drills have a cylindrical shank, which can be used without any problems in all cordless screwdrivers and drilling devices that have a conventional drill chuck. The diameter of the shank of our HK drills always corresponds to the diameter of the drill hole.

Due to the very pointed drill tip with a tip angle of 80°, the drill has excellent self-centring properties, so that precise drilling is possible without pre-drilling or marking out the drill hole position, even when drills with larger diameters are used. Drilling plastic pipes is also extremely easy to carry out without fear of the drill slipping. Thanks to the generously dimensioned spiral with a long spiral twist, the plastic chips are quickly and efficiently removed from the drill hole. Another advantage, which is due to the long spiral twist, is that the heat development during drilling is significantly lower than with drills with a normal spiral twist of type N. The reduced heat development not only prevents the drill chip from melting into the edge of the drill hole, but also contributes significantly to the very long service life of the plastic drills.

    Scope of delivery:
  • 1 x HSS-G twist drill for plastics type HK

NOTE: To guarantee perfect drill holes every time, drills should always be checked for damage to the cutting edges of the drill tip and the drill spiral before use. Damaged drills should no longer be used as this can result in chipping at the edges of the drill hole.

Application examples for our HSS plastic drills

Thanks to the special geometry that characterises this plastic drill, drilling plastic sheets is very easy. Even brittle plastics that tend to splinter or break out during drilling can be drilled without any problems with the sharp drill bit. Such plastics include acrylic glass, Plexiglas® or also PVC sheets made of solid hard PVC. Thanks to the drill tip with a tip angle of 80 degrees, the drill glides effortlessly through the hard surfaces of these plastics without having to exert pressure on the tip.

While drilling plastics with less brittleness such as polyethylene, polypropylene or even ABS plastic can be done freehand without much preparation, care should be taken when drilling acrylic glass to ensure that the sheet rests firmly under the drill hole and cannot flutter or vibrate. The easiest way to achieve this is to place the plastic plate to be drilled on another plate made of softer wood (e.g. a small wooden board made of spruce or fir) or plastic at the drill hole position and fix both plates together. This prevents the plate from vibrating, which means that no cracks or splinters occur when the drill comes out.

Another advantage of our plastic drill lies in the grinding of the drill head and the long-drawn cutting edges. After milling the drill, these are additionally ground in a separate production step to achieve a significantly increased sharpness. This not only enables more precise drilling. With transparent plastics such as PETG, acrylic glass or polycarbonate, the drill holes are often visible later. Due to the grinding, the holes appear evenly smooth and are largely free of scoring, which can certainly occur when using conventional HSS drills. Reworking by smoothing the drill holes to improve the appearance is therefore not necessary.

Even though the drills are made of high-quality high-speed steel (HSS), the plastic drills are not suitable for drilling in hard materials such as metal or our HPL boards. Although HSS steel is certainly suitable for such materials, due to the drill geometry the wear on the drill tip would be too high, so that the high service life is significantly reduced. For such applications, we recommend our profile-ground HSS-G drills with a point angle of 118° or our cobalt-alloyed HSS-E drills, which are also ideally suited for drilling in stainless steel.

WARNING: HSS twist drills such as our HK plastic drills in ground version are not suitable for drilling with the impact drilling function activated and can be damaged if not observed.
