Our black EPDM lead substitute is available in two versions as a 10-metre roll and is completely weatherproof and waterproof. It consists of a grey self-adhesive EPDM underside, a robust granulated top layer in black and amesh fabricmade of aluminium expandedmetal. Thismakes the sealing tape light, robust and verymalleable. The adhesive layer adheres very well to all common buildingmaterials, from plaster to bricks. The flexible EPDM sealing tape is UV and weather resistant,making it suitable for countless building sealing applications both indoors and outdoors. It provides effective and reliable protection against water damage and draughts.

The three-layer EPDM sealing tape with a black top layer is available in roll widths of 150mm or 300mm and can be easily cut to the desired length using large household scissors. The black sealing tape is ideal for visually inconspicuous sealing on very dark roof tiles, slate, EPDM roofingmembranes, tar paper andmuchmore.

Properties of flexible lead substitute in black

Our lead substitute consists of high-quality EPDM with an intermediate layer of stainless aluminium expandedmetal, which increases the stability of the building seal, especially when used on uneven surfaces, angular bonds or for sealing corrugated roof tiles. On the underside, the sealing tape consists of a special EPDM with excellent self-adhesion, which ensures reliable adhesion to almost all buildingmaterials. The granulate-coated upper side of the black EPDM is completely weatherproof, robust and resistant tomechanical stress and impact. The combination of the three layers creates a reliable sealing tape that is airtight and guaranteed waterproof – even with a 25-yearmanufacturer's warranty on waterproofing.

With a total thickness of 2mm, the sealing tape can be easily applied even in tight radii or internal corners. This ismuchmore difficult or even impossible with conventional rolled lead. Thanks to the aluminiummesh fabric, the sealing tape can be shaped very easily and stretched to a certain extent, so that even concrete pillars can be sealed very easily without having to cut into the EPDM.

NOTE: For optimum adhesion of the EPDM sealing tape, the processing temperature should not fall below +5°C.

Application and handling of self-adhesive EPDM lead substitute

The black EPDM lead substitute is used for waterproofing buildings indoors and outdoors and is primarily required when installing skylights and weatherboards to prevent rain and standing water from penetrating. It is also ideal for connecting chimney surrounds, flat roofs and garages to risingmasonry, for sealing window and door frames or for connectingmasonry to terrace roofs. When used as a repair tape, it can also be used to seal cracks and leaks in roof coverings and roofingmembranes. Even downpipes, gutters or rain barrels can be repaired with the robust sealing tape.

Before applying the sealing tape, the surfacemust be clean, dry and free of dust to ensure full adhesion. The sealing tape is then unrolled from the roll and cut to the required length. An overlap of 10 cm to themasonry or adjacent roof tiles should be taken into account. It should also be noted that the typical wave shape of a roof tilemeans that the lengthmust be slightly longer.

To apply the EPDM sealing tape, remove the backing film from the light grey adhesive side and then attach it to one side of the structure. The non-adhesive side with the black granulated coatingmust face outwards. Now align the sealing tape lengthwise and hold it with one hand at the rear end far enough away from the surface, while pressing the sealing tape piece by piece with the other hand, following the shape of the structure or the tiles. When you reach the end, press the sealing tape firmly over the entire surface with both hands. Particularly in the case of inner corners or recesses, it is important to ensure that the adhesive is applied over a large area and without gaps.

TIP: For longer distances, it is advisable to pull the backing film away piece by piece towards the rear to prevent the adhesive surface from accidentally sticking to the substrate.

If not done beforehand, the sealing tapemust be cut off at the end with a pair of heavy-duty scissors. When bonding around external corners, a cut towards the corner can simplify the bonding process. Additionally, this cut should be covered with a narrower strip of sealing tape to ensure tightness. For building seals with a total length ofmore than 10metres, for example to seal a flat roof to the adjacent building, the sealing tape can be extended with another roll. However, sufficient overlapping bonding of at least 10 cm is also required here to create a permanently watertight and airtight seal.

Cleaning andmaintenance of building waterproofing

Basically, there is nothing else to consider when it comes to cleaning andmaintenance, because, as a building and roof sealant, EPDM sealing tape ismainly installed in places that are not easily accessible anyway. Inmost cases, a rain shower is sufficient to wash away dust deposits and dirt. Alternatively, the surface can be cleaned of contaminants using a sponge and amild soap solution. The use of a high-pressure cleaner does not have a negative effect on the seal, but caremust be taken not to work at a sharp angle to the adhesive edges or from too close a distance.

When using strong chemical cleaners (e.g. acids, alkalis, oil and solvents), we recommend testing compatibility on a sample piece beforehand.
