Description

PE-UHMW (PE-1000) sheets in natural are enormously wear-resistant!

Up to -260°C ✓ Extremely abrasion-resistant ✓ Made in Germany

Our PE-HD-UHMW sheets in natural colour are available as standard sheets in thicknesses from 8mm to 100mm. The size of our standard sheets is 2000mm in length and 1000mm in width, which is more than sufficient for most applications. The PE-UHMW sheets have the milky, cloudy colour typical of polyethylene in its natural form. This applies to the surfaces as well as to the sawn and cut edges. Polyethylene in the natural colour is opaque, but still translucent in very small thicknesses. However, the available minimum thickness of 8mm for our PE-UHMW sheets hardly lets any light through, so this aspect is negligible. Our ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets are not plastic sheets with a foamed polyethylene core, but solid sheets of high-quality virgin material manufactured in Germany under strict quality controls. The surfaces of our PE-UHMW sheets in natural are smooth and are delivered without protective film.

NOTE: As an engineering plastic, polyethylene, like our PE-UHMW sheets in natural colour, is not recommended for use for optical purposes.

Properties of our PE1000 sheets in natural

PE-UHMW, or more precisely PE-HD-UHMW is the abbreviation for polyethylene - high density - ultra high molecular weight. This means that this type of polyethylene has a high density and a very high molecular weight, which is due to the very long molecular chains. The average molecular weight of PE-UHMW is more than 9 million g/mol. The very high molecular density makes PE-1000, as it is also very often called, a high-performance plastic compared to conventional PE-HD (high-density polyethylene), or to PE-HMW (PE-500, polyethylene with a high molecular weight), which is characterised in particular by its very good wear resistance and very low abrasion. These properties in conjunction with the very good impact and shock resistance (known as notched impact strength in technical jargon) lead to a very long service life.

Another advantage of the high molecular density (one also speaks of a narrower molar mass density), are the significantly better sliding properties of PE-UHMW compared to PE-HD or PE-HMW. The lower coefficient of sliding friction is an indicator of low wear and a long service life. Mechanical engineering in particular takes advantage of this for the production of machine parts that are subject to the very highest stresses. For example, for use as plain bearings, chain guides or gear wheels.

PE-UHMW (PE-1000) is very often used in materials handling technology or bulk materials technology (mining, open-cast mining, cold stores, etc.). This applies in particular when requirements are placed on the plastic with regard to strong dynamic loads at very low temperatures. Finally, PE-UHMW can be used at temperatures from extremely low -260°C to +80°C, whereas PE-HMW can only be used from -100°C to +80°C (PE-HD only from -50°C to +80°C). In the case of heavy loads due to movement or impacts, an incorrectly selected material can fail at temperatures that are too low, which is almost impossible with PE-UHMW due to its very high impact and shock resistance, as well as its very good stress crack resistance.

PE-UHMW is considered a waterproof plastic because it absorbs practically no moisture. The surfaces of our PE-UHMW sheets are water-repellent. This is due, among other things, to the excellent chemical resistance. PE-UHMW (PE-1000) is highly resistant to many acids (even in concentrated form), alkalis and organic solvents. This also applies to permanent contact with chemicals and under strong dynamic stress. For this reason, container trays in the chemical industry or linings in special vehicle construction are made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene 1000.

Approvals for PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in natural

As is typical for polyethylene, the natural-coloured PE-UHMW or PE-1000 is also food-safe and complies with the food conformities according to EU 10/2011 and FDA, which is why this plastic is increasingly used in the food industry.

  • Physiologically safe according to BfR
  • Food conformity according to EU 10/2011
  • Food conformity FDA

Standards for PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in natural

  • REACH (EU Chemicals Regulation)
  • RoHS (Regulation on the Prohibition of Hazardous Substances in the Electrical Industry)
  • PAK (Directive on compliance with limit values for polyaromatic hydrocarbons)

We manufacture your milled parts in series production for mechanical engineering and other milled parts from PE-UHMW.

PE-UHMW is very often used in mechanical engineering for machine parts with the highest demands on durability and resilience. Thanks to our state-of-the-art milling machines with computer control, it is possible for us to produce milled parts for you from our natural-coloured PE-UHMW sheets. And that from prototype to series production in large quantities. All information about our milling service can be found here.

Application examples for PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in natural

  • Machine parts with high dynamic stress are made of PE-UHMW in natural colour
  • In harbour construction, the impact-resistant PE-UHMW sheets are often used due to their waterproof properties
  • Vehicle construction uses PE-UHMW sheets for body linings because of their chemical resistance
  • Bulk hoppers are often made from PE-UHMW due to its high impact strength and temperature resistance

Processing of PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in natural

Polyethylene is a very easy plastic to process and so the plastic sheets made of PE-UHMW (PE-1000) can be cut to the desired size in a wide variety of ways. Cuts can be made with simple hand tools for woodworking by sawing or milling, but also by the water jet cutting process and CO2 laser cutting. Punching out shaped parts or turning and drilling can also be carried out without any problems with our PE-UHMW sheets.

Cold forming is used to produce finished plastic parts from ultra-high molecular weight PE-1000. PE-1000 is a thermoplastic, but thermoforming is just as little possible with this plastic as thermoforming. Therefore, PE-HD is almost exclusively used for thermoforming.

The anti-adhesive properties of polyethylene, as with the natural-coloured PE-UHMW sheets, contribute to the fact that they cannot be painted, printed or laminated (covered with a film). Also for bonding polyethylene, a special adhesive such as our S-Polybond PEprofi on a two-component basis is required, because bonding with conventional solvent-based adhesives does not lead to a positive adhesive result.

In principle, the natural-coloured PE-UHMW sheets can be welded, but this is hardly a common method in practice, because PE-UHMW is used primarily because of its very high wear resistance and very long service life.

NOTE: As an engineering plastic, our PE-UHMW sheets are only suitable for optical purposes to a limited extent and are supplied without a protective film.
