Description

PE-UHMW (PE-1000) sheets in black with a very long service life!

UV-stabilised ✓ Extremely abrasion-resistant ✓ Made in Germany

Our PE-HD-UHMW sheets in black are available in thicknesses from 8mm to 80mm with a standard format of 2000mmx1000mm. Our PE-UHMW sheets in black are exclusively solid plastic sheets made of solid core material. They do not contain a foamed polyethylene core. For a consistent black colour on cut edges and surfaces, the PE-UHMW sheets are completely dyed through. The surfaces of our ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets are smooth and are delivered without protective film.

NOTE: Polyethylene is an engineering plastic and as such is not recommended for use for optical purposes.

Properties of our PE1000 sheets in black

PE-HD-UHMW is usually referred to as PE-UHMW or PE-1000 and stands for polyethylene with high density and ultra high molecular weight. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene has very long molecular chains and an average molecular weight of more than 9 million g/mol. This makes PE-UHMW (PE-1000) significantly better than PE-HD or PE-HME (PE-500) in terms of wear resistance, abrasion resistance and notched impact strength. The latter stands for very good impact and shock resistance.

The very high molecular density (lower molar mass density) is particularly noticeable in the very low coefficient of sliding friction - to put it simply, the increased sliding properties of PE-UHMW. This increases the service life in particular, which is why PE-UHMW is used for chain guides, plain bearings or gear wheels that are subject to the highest stresses. But PE-UHMW is also used in medical technology, for example in the manufacture of orthoses, because of its very high wear resistance.

Another advantage of our black PE-UHMW (PE-1000) sheets is the temperature range, which extends from lowest temperatures of -260°C to +80°C. The lowest application temperature of PE-HMW is just -100°C. The lowest application temperature of PE-HMW is just -100°C. In the case of PE-HD, it is even as low as -50°C, which is still sufficient for most areas of application, but the limits of load-bearing capacity are reached, especially in terms of dynamic stress and impact resistance at low to very low temperatures, which is why PE-UHMW is used in particular in materials handling technology and bulk materials technology (for example in mining or open-cast mining).

PE-UHMW absorbs practically no moisture and is considered waterproof or water-repellent. In addition, PE-UHMW is very resistant to contact with strong acids, alkalis and organic solvents. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene also has very good resistance to stress cracking, which again has a positive effect on its long service life. This also applies to permanent contact with chemicals under strong dynamic stress. For this reason, PE-UHMW (PE-1000) is increasingly used in the chemical industry or in special vehicle construction.

Approvals for PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in black

  • RoHS (Regulation on the Prohibition of Hazardous Substances in the Electrical Industry)
  • PAK (Directive on compliance with limit values for polyaromatic hydrocarbons)

Our PE-UHMW (PE-1000) sheets are available on request in other thicknesses, sizes and cut to size.

In addition to our standard delivery programme of black PE-UHMW sheets with a format of 2000mmx1000mm, it is also possible for us to supply larger sheet formats of 3000mmx1250mm on request. Other thicknesses of up to 120mm are also available for the black PE-1000 polyethylene sheets. In addition, you can also order your plastic sheets directly in the sizes you need. Simply send us an email stating the required thicknesses, the dimensions for length and width in millimetres, as well as the desired number of pieces per delivery and we will process your enquiry immediately and provide you with an inexpensive offer including shipping costs.

We manufacture individual milled parts according to your design drawing from our black PE-UHMW sheets.

Thanks to our computer-controlled 3-axis CNC milling machines, it is possible, on request, to manufacture individual milled parts, for example plain bearings, seals or gear wheels, from our black PE-UHMW (PE-1000) sheets. All information about our milling service can be found here.

Application examples for PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in black

  • PE-UHMW is used for vehicle bodies due to its impact resistance and very good chemical resistance
  • The very long service life of PE-UHMW is used for plain bearings and gear wheels in mechanical engineering
  • In mining and materials handling, PE-UHMW is used even at very low temperatures thanks to its good dynamic load-bearing capacity
  • Plates made of PE-UHMW are characterised by their very good resistance to permanent contact with chemicals

Processing PE-UHMW (PE-1000) in black

A wide variety of methods are available for processing our black plastic sheets made of PE-UHMW (PE-1000). Similar to wood, PE-UHMW can be cut to size with simple tools by sawing or milling. The black PE-1000 sheets can also be cut to the desired size using a CO2 laser or water jet cutting. Punching, turning or drilling are also common processing methods used for polyethylene.

PE-UHMW belongs to the thermoplastics, but cannot be deep-drawn or thermoformed. Cold moulding, on the other hand, is a widely used method of producing moulded parts from the black ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.

Polyethylene has excellent resistance to chemicals and organic solvents, so the black PE-UHMW sheets cannot be printed, painted or covered with a film. Gluing the PE-UHMW sheets to PE or other plastics with solvent-based plastic adhesives also does not lead to a positive result. To glue the black PE-UHMW sheets nevertheless, we offer in our online shop a special adhesive S-Polybond PEprofi on a two-component basis, which was developed for difficult-to-bond plastics such as polyethylene.

Welding PE-1000 is certainly possible, but is hardly ever used in practice, as this high-performance plastic is used more in relation to its very high wear resistance and service life.

NOTE: As an engineering plastic, our PE-UHMW sheets are only suitable for optical purposes to a limited extent and are supplied without a protective film.
