Our FOME FLEX low expansion 1K PU assembly foam is a special construction foam with a low post-expansion of approx. 30% and therefore perfectly suitable for foaming in window frames and door frames. Especially when installing interior doors, too much expansion of the foam can cause the frame to bulge. The low post-expansion prevents this and allows a more precise foaming of the gaps without overflowing the foam. The ready-to-use PU foam in a 750ml pistol foam can be processed with any conventional PU foam gun and can be dosed very precisely.
FOME FLEX low expansion is an installation foam that impresses with very good insulation values for sound and heat insulation. For this reason, the PU foam is used for filling cracks and gaps as well as for roof insulation. Due to the low post-expansion, very clean processing is possible without reworking. It is also thanks to this property that the assembly foam is often used as frame foam for interior doors. Especially for such applications, it is important that the foam does not emit any harmful emissions after curing. Our FOME FLEX low expansion is considered to have very low emissions and is certified according to the recognised GEV Emicode with the best possible emission protection class EC1+. Cut resistance is already achieved after about 20 minutes. Depending on the foam volume and moisture content, complete curing is achieved after 1.5 hours, but can take up to 5 hours for larger gap fillings. In applications where the assembly foam is used for assembly and bonding, the fixing of the assembly parts is maintained until curing.
TIP: For urgent assemblies where a fast curing of the assembly foam is required, we stock a fast-curing adhesive foam with a curing time of approx. 10 minutes.
FOME FLEX low expansion has excellent adhesion to all typical building materials such as wood, concrete, brick, all metals, PVC, EPS or XPS. This makes the assembly foam perfect for insulating and isolating when installing door and window frames both indoors and outdoors. The fine-pored foam structure ensures very good thermal insulation with a very low thermal conductivity of 0.036 W/mK. In addition to thermal insulation, sound insulation also plays a decisive role when choosing the right installation foam. The sound insulation of FOME FLEX low expansion is 58db according to EN ISO 717-1, which corresponds to a conversation at normal volume or a radio or TV at room volume. FOME FLEX installation foam is also suitable for filling gaps and cracks, as well as for insulating plumbing, heating and ventilation equipment.
The working temperature of the assembly foam is between +5°C and +35°C. At low temperatures, however, it is advisable to warm up the foam can slowly to +20°C. The construction foam should not be applied below +5°C, because temperatures that are too low prevent the formation of the fine-pored foam structure that is required to achieve good sound and heat insulation. In order to be able to use the installation foam for windows and doors made of aluminium or PVC outdoors as well, the temperature resistance after curing ranges from -40°C up to +90°C.
NOTE: The PU assembly foam is not suitable for polyolefins (polyethylene, polypropylene) and PTFE due to insufficient adhesion.
In addition to the tough, sticky PU compound, ready-to-use 1C PU gun foams contain a blowing agent that transports the foam out of the can and causes the foam to form pores. For this, the propellant must be mixed with the adhesive mass. Before screwing the can onto the foam gun, it should therefore be shaken vigorously for approx. 20 seconds. When screwing on the gun, make sure that the gun handle is not accidentally activated. Some guns have a dosing wheel that prevents the handle from being released when closed. The foam quantity and quality is then adjusted by loosening the dosage adjustment screw.
When foaming cracks and crevices, as well as when bonding window and door frames, the substrate should be well cleaned, dusted and thoroughly moistened. The application is done by inserting the gun tube about halfway into the gap and injecting the foam until it fills about two-thirds of the gap. The gun barrel must be pointing upwards so that the foam mass can flow downwards out of the barrel. The high-yield foam of a single can with 750ml content yields up to 42 litres of foam volume, which, depending on the gap thickness and frame depth, is sufficient for about 5 interior doors (assuming 1cm gap thickness, 18cm frame depth). When filling cavities, it is beneficial to spray the surfaces of the foam with water to optimise curing, as one-component polyurethane foams require moisture to cure.
TIP: In case of continuous work, pauses in between, or if some time passes between foaming due to the installation of the next door frame, it is recommended to shake the gun and the screwed-on foam can vigorously in the meantime so that the adhesive mass does not settle from the propellant.
The cut resistance of the assembly foam is reached after about 20 - 25 minutes, depending on the application thickness. Afterwards, overflowing foam residues can easily be cut off with a sharp knife. If necessary, the cured foam can then be filled and painted over. After foaming, the partially emptied can can remain on the gun, but the metering wheel should be completely closed so that the foam does not harden inside the gun tube. It is advisable to clean the gun after finishing the work with a gun foam cleaner, such as our FOME FLEX foam cleaner thoroughly from the inside and outside as long as the foam has not yet hardened.
WARNING: Gloves and close-fitting safety goggles should always be worn when working with PU assembly foam.
Before using the assembly foam FOME FLEX low expansion, the technical data sheet and the safety data sheet should be observed. Above all, the specifications for personal protective equipment (protective gloves, safety goggles) must be urgently observed. Use the PU foam only outdoors or in well-ventilated rooms and avoid contact with the skin or eyes. Always keep the foam cans closed and out of reach of children.
